What is it?
SuperValu Irish Hampshire Stuffed Pork Steak (€7.99/700g).
What’s good about it?
Let’s be straight about this – I would not normally buy any main course protein, chicken, pork or lamb, already stuffed. Too often the stuffing is tasteless mush, and I prefer to make my own. But this is different, and incredibly good value, easily feeding four people (or three very hungry ones), for less than €8, with no effort required other than popping it in the oven.
Tell me more about it?
The Hampshire breed pork is reared for SuperValu’s Signature Tastes premium range by Luke Bogue in Ballinagh, Co Cavan. The packaging promises lean, flavoursome pork that is a richer red meat colour than standard pork. The fillet comes stuffed with a nicely spiced mixed fruit and bread stuffing and topped with maple smoked streaky bacon.

How do I use it?
I roasted it in an oven tray, with a drizzle of olive oil on top. It took around 35 minutes, and I left it to rest for 15 minutes tightly wrapped in foil. It cut well, holding its shape with the bacon on top and the stuffing inside, and was extremely tasty. I served it with roast potatoes and carrot and parsnip mash for an easy and economical midweek roast.
Where can I get it?
It is available in branches of SuperValu, nationwide.
Anything else?
The packaging says it can be roasted in the bag it comes in, if you want to avoid washing an oven tray.
