Two wines from Lidl today. We know Argentina for its swarthy, rich, powerful Malbec, but it does produce lots of other wines too, including Chardonnay. Here, when the Burgundian grape is grown in cooler sites and picked early, it produces some very refreshing white wines. Central Otago is one of the most southerly vineyards in the world. Over the past 20 years it has become a leading producer of Chardonnay, Riesling and some amazing Pinot Noir in particular. The long summers have proven ideal for this finicky grape. Most Central Otago Pinot Noir costs more than €20, so the bottle below is something of a bargain at €11.99.
Cimarosa Chardonnay 2021, Argentina, 12.5%, €7.69
A lighter, fresher unoaked style of Chardonnay, with crisp green apple and melon fruits and a dry finish. This would go perfectly with fish, chicken and lighter creamy pasta dishes. Try it with fish cakes, risotto primavera or spaghetti carbonara.
Outlook Bay Pinot Noir 2020, Central Otago, New Zealand, 12.5%, €11.99
Light and refreshing, with piquant raspberry and strawberry fruits. The acidity is quite high, so you could serve it lightly chilled with seared salmon, tuna or fresh-tomato pasta dishes.
