Two wines from Centra this week, representing opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of power. The Don Simon is a mere 11.5% abv, the Rasteau 14.5%. It is unusual to find a Sauvignon Blanc from Spain, but this is a well-made refreshing dry wine at a very keen price.
The village of Rasteau in the Southern Rhône produces full-bodied, powerful wines using similar grape varieties to its more famous neighbours Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas.
Don Simon Sauvignon Blanc Nature 2021, Spain, 11.5%, €8
Lightly aromatic with white flowers and a racy crisp dry palate, with green fruits and lemon zest. This would make a good aperitif, or an accompaniment to tapas.
Rasteau 2018, France, 14.5%, €12
A warming 14.5% with rich rounded red fruits and a smooth finish. If you have started cooking winter casseroles this would be a perfect companion. Or if you haven’t put the barbecue away yet, enjoy it with red meats and grilled Mediterranean vegetables.
