Wines from two classic regions this week, names that will certainly be familiar to an older generation who cut their wine teeth on Muscadet and Bordeaux. Both wines are part of the newly arrived seasonal range from Lidl, although the Muscadet has featured before. I will cover more in Saturday’s wine column and also next week but in the meantime, enjoy these two well-priced wines.

John Wilson 2209 Deux Vallons
John Wilson 2209 Deux Vallons

Domaine des Deux Vallons 2021, Muscadet de Sèvre & Main sur lie

A classic Muscadet, light and refreshing with green apple fruits, lemon zest and a light fizz. Locally, they would down this with oysters, and the two go perfectly together, but you could also try mussels or lighter creamy soft cheese salads. 12% abv, €9.99 from Lidl.

John Wilson 2209 Fonpiqueyre
John Wilson 2209 Fonpiqueyre
Chateau Fonpiqueyre 2015, Cru Bourgeois, Médoc

Now eight years old, this has matured nicely, showing a soft leafiness (what the French call sous-bois) and medium-bodied gentle brambly fruit. The traditional match in Bordeaux would be a roast of lamb, and that would do nicely, but so too would lamb chops, baked ham or baked stuffed mushrooms. 13.5% abv, €14.99 from Lidl.
