I sniffed and slurped my way through a range of low- and no-alcohol wines recently and came to the conclusion that alcohol-free sparkling wines are the best in the category. I cover alcoholic sparkling wines elsewhere this weekend, so I thought it would a good idea to look at alcohol-free versions too. There is no shortage of options.
One favourite is the French Bloom Le Blanc, Organic Alcohol-free Bubbly; it is not cheap at €28 (and the rosé is €30) but it does have a lovely fruitiness and is quite dry. The Kollone Null Cuvée No 1 (€22, independents) is also pretty good. Then there is a clutch of sparkling wines between €9 and €15, including Hollow Leg, Leitz, Noughty, Kylie Sparkling Rosé, and l’Arjolle Zéro. There are plenty of alcohol-free Prosecco styles, usually priced around €4-€5, and Frexinet for €6.50. Some producers add grape juice or other fruit juices to add extra flavour, but they still generally have less sugar than other soft drinks and fruit juices.
However, there is no need to restrict yourself to wine. There are plenty of interesting alcohol-free drinks. If you are a cider drinker the HighBank Drivers Cider is organic and alcohol-free, as is the Stonewell Zero Alcohol Cider. The Apple Farm make a delicious cloudy Sparkling Apple Juice. Craft beer drinkers should try out the Kinnegar Low Tide.
Alternatively, you could offer nondrinkers a Kombucha; All About Kombucha have three organic kombuchas that are not too sweet, as do ProKulture and Synerchi. My favourite is the Copenhagen Company Sparkling Tea Lyserød (€22), not a wine at all but a lovely sophisticated, sparkling drink that looks the part and tastes great. There is a rosé version, too.
