Two well-known names this week from Aldi. Muscadet, made from the Melon de Bourgogne grape variety, comes from a large region surrounding Nantes at the mouth of the Loire Valley. Inexpensive versions, such as the wine below, make great everyday wines to enjoy by themselves or with lighter foods. You will also find more expensive Muscadet, some of which can be excellent.
Australian Shiraz is another classic wine. Shiraz arrived from Europe (where it is known as Syrah) in the mid-19th century and thrived in its new home. The style and flavours of the wine depend on where it is grown. Wines from cooler regions are more elegant with higher acidity; those from warmer climes are typically rich and full-bodied with supple tannins.
