Tens of thousands of parcels from the UK to Ireland were delayed as Irish customers were caught by the closure of Holyhead Port due to damage caused by Storm Darragh.

A backlog of 500,000 parcels destined for Ireland was rerouted amid the port closure by An Post. On Friday, it said most of the packages should be delivered by Christmas Day.

“Some 350,000 of the 500,000 parcels destined for An Post that were stuck in Holyhead were rerouted by freight companies and arrived into us over night and are already being processed for delivery,” An Post said on Friday.

“The remaining 150,000 have now secured space on ferries and will be with us in the next couple of days. All of these items will be delivered in time for Christmas, as will all parcels that reach our hubs by December 21st.”

Many UK retailers were working with ferry companies to secure other routes into Ireland while Holyhead remains closed. Larger capacity ferries are now accessing Ireland from Wales, Scotland and Liverpool, resulting in a much decreased build-up of parcel trucks at Holyhead.

Have you been impacted by this disruption? Is there a key Christmas present you are waiting for? Have you received updates from your seller or parcel company or an offer of a refund?

Or have you been unable to order items from large sellers like Amazon due to postal delays? Have you turned to other Irish online retailers to save Christmas? Have you battled your way through traffic to the bricks and mortar retailers looking for your items? Or is there a key item on the list you are unable to secure on time?
