A pedestrian in her 70s was killed in Co Carlow after she was struck by a car on the N80.

Gardaí are investigating the incident which occurred at about 6.30pm on Friday in the townland of Rathcrogue. The woman’s body has been removed to the Mortuary in Waterford Regional Hospital where gardaí say a postmortem will take place in due course. The driver of the car, a man in his 20s, was uninjured.

The N80 at Rathcrogue will remain closed overnight for a technical examination of the scene by Garda forensic collision investigators to take place on Saturday morning. Local diversions are in place.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to come forward, and have asked road users who may have camera footage, including dashcam footage, who were travelling in the area at the time of the collision to make this footage available to gardaí. Separately, a person was killed in Northern Ireland in a two-car collision in Co Armagh shortly before 1pm on Friday. Four adults and a child were understood to be travelling in one car, and one adult in the second vehicle.

One person was pronounced dead at the scene on the Killylea Road, about 10km outside Armagh City and a number of others were treated for what were described as non-life-threatening injuries.
