Man found dead after fire in Cork city flat

A man has been found dead following a fire in a flat on the southside of Cork city.

Three units of Cork City Fire Brigade attended the property on Togher Road at about 7pm on Friday. The fire was contained within one room in the flat.

The man, understood to be in his 60s, was found dead inside.

A second person was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene.

The man’s body remained in the flat on Friday night.

The property was being preserved ahead of a technical examination, which will attempt to establish the cause of the fire.

The Office of the State Pathologist has been notified and a postmortem will be carried out at Cork University Hospital in due course. The findings of this will help to determine the course of the Garda investigation.
