Gardaí are appealing for witnesses following a fatal road traffic collision in which a man (34) lost his life when his car ended up in a flooded river in Co Cork overnight.

The man, who is understood to be Indian and married with a family, lost his life when his car left the R628 between Rathcormac in Co Cork and Tallow in Co Waterford and entered the river Bride near Conna.

Family and friends became concerned on Friday night when the man, who was working in the kitchens of a nursing home in Leamlara in east Cork, failed to return home and they drove the road searching for him.

However, a motorist driving along the R628 noticed the man’s upended and partially submerged car in the river Bride at around 10am on Saturday morning and raised the alarm, alerting the emergency services.

The man, the sole occupant of the car, was removed from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene before his body was removed to Cork University Hospital where a postmortem will take place.

Gardaí closed the road and put diversions in place to allow a Garda forensic collision investigator to carry out an examination of the scene to try to determine how exactly the man’s car ended up in the river.

Investigators are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact them or were travelling on the Conna Road R628 between 10pm on Friday and 10am on Saturday to contact them at Fermoy Garda station on 025-82100.

The number of people who have died on Irish roads so far this year stands at 183, already exceeding the total of 174 in 2024.
