Cream eyeshadows are probably one of the most under-rated make-up products; their powdery counterparts are a far more popular option. However, cream eyeshadows can add depth and dimension to your eyelids, offering a much stronger pigment. The finish is generally more shimmery, compared to the flat, matte finish associated with most powder shadows.

The high-street make-up brands have a great selection of pots and pencils that won't break the bank. Maybelline Colour Tattoo 24hr Eyeshadows (€10.49) come in 11 wearable colours that are really vibrant and will not fade or move. Max Factor Excess Shimmer Eyeshadows (€9.99) are similarly good. NYX Jumbo Eye Pencils (€7) are compact and easy to apply, making them handy for keeping in your bag if you want to take your look from office to out.

If you have oily eyelids, a primer will hold the product in place and stop it creasing. For a subtle daytime look, apply the cream with your finger; the warmth of your finger will help blend the colour nicely. For a more dramatic look use a dense, flat brush such as Mac's 214 Short Shader brush, or a clean concealer brush, and dab on the product to build up the colour. Buff in the eyeshadow around the crease of your eyelid using a large, fluffy blending brush to avoid any sharp or harsh lines. A dusting of translucent powder will set the shadow nicely.
