Perfecting the winged eyeliner look is notoriously difficult and is one of the few make-up techniques that requires good old-fashioned practice. However, there are some simple tricks you can use to perfect your look in a nod to a make-up trend that has stood the test of time. For a winged line, or a flick, you need either a gel or a liquid liner. Liquid liner is probably the most difficult of all the options but it is also the most dramatic and the longest-lasting. A good rule of thumb is to follow the angle of your lower lash line, continuing outwards towards the end of your eyebrow.
Shirley Donovan, make-up artist with Urban Decay in Mahon Point, suggests starting from the point where you want the flick to end and working inwards towards the middle of your eyelid, following the same line as previously mentioned. Think of it as like drawing an oddly shaped triangle, then fill in below this triangle, hugging the lash line right down to the base of the eyelashes.
Alternatively you can use a flesh-coloured pencil to draw in the flick and, once you’re happy with the shape, fill it in with your gel liner. Use remover on a clean, angled brush to correct mistakes.
