Stylefile: Swedish giant cuts an interesting shape as Beautiful South helps redesign Rathmines

The new season’s trends include wider trousers, wider skirts and a general feeling for volume and ease illustrated in this duo from Cos’s autumn winter collection. Shot at the Kivik Art Centre in Sweden by art photographer Viviane Sassen on model Karen Elson, the new collection has the signature Cos mix of natural and technically innovative fabrics in reproportioned and always interesting shapes.

Grey jackets, wool jumpers, wide-leg trousers and dramatically cut dresses and shirts go on sale in early September. The Swedish giant makes a point of collaborating with established and emerging artists, galleries and creative studios that reflect its considered approach to design and maybe sometime it might think of Ireland as a destination.

Beautiful south

She confesses to “zero background” in fashion, but oh what style. Grainne Wynne’s cool new boutique, Beautiful South, in Rathmines, which she designed and furnished herself, is a significant addition to the renovated Swan Centre and a destination in itself. Featuring a host of interesting avant garde labels from around Europe, most particularly MM6, the more affordable line by Martin Margiela, it has interesting newcomers and others selected by her particularly discerning eye.

A self-confessed stay-at-home mother who had worked in restaurants previously, she got a job in a local boutique after her husband’s business foundered, and she discovered a passion for the work. The store opened in March and has already acquired an enthusiastic following not just for the clothes, but also shoes, skincare (from Irish brand Oxmantown) and Clean Slate candles, so the atmosphere attracts attention too.
