Mid-week tipple: Two summer Sauvignons

Each week John Wilson selects two wines for you to try at home, this week Aldi Lot 13 New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc 2015 and Cape Peninsula Sauvignon Blanc 2015

Aldi Lot 13 New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc 2015

€12.99 from Aldi

Our passion for Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc shows no sign of abating if Aldi are anything to go by. At their recent portfolio tasting, they had three on show. The first two I found a little sweet, but the Lot 13 New Zealand Sauvignon, which comes from Marlborough, was a classic of the style. But then again, it is more expensive than the other two. Lifted elderflower aromas, fresh crisp green fruits and a good dry finish. Perfect summer drinking.

As it is now officially summer, let us keep the Sauvignon theme going.

Cape Peninsula Sauvignon Blanc 2015, South Africa

As it is now officially summer, let us keep the Sauvignon theme going. South Africa is one of the few New World countries that can rival Marlborough and New Zealand for Sauvignon Blanc. The South African versions tend to be a little less exuberant, and a little more austere; sort of Sancerre meets Marlborough. This is an excellent crisp dry Sauvignon, aromatic, with pristine clean tropical fruits and a dry finish.  Great on its own, and even better with food; salads, goat’s cheese or seafood.
