Dublin is the second-most “coffee-obsessed” capital city in the world according to a new survey.
There are 181 coffee shops per 100,000 people in Dublin, serving coffee with an average rating of 3.91 out of 5, according to research carried out by BrewSmartly, which researches and sells coffee products online.
The Dutch capital Amsterdam took the top spot, with 116 coffee shops per 100,000 population, serving coffee with an average rating of 4.03.
In joint-third place was Bern in Switzerland and Paris in France. However, their scores were made up rather differently. In Bern, there are 54 coffee shops per 100,000, but 45 in Paris. The Swiss city's coffee earned a score of 3.95, while the French capital's hit 4.11 - one of the highest in the top 10, outdone only by Pago Pago in American Samoa (4.31).
The overall scores out of 10 assigned to each city were based on a mix of the number of coffee shops per 100,000 population, the quality of the coffee they serve, and the value of coffee imported per capita. Dublin hit 7.95 out of 10, while Amsterdam led with 8.71. The quality of coffee was estimated based on collated online reviews of coffee shops.
Of the top five cities, Dubliners spend the second least on coffee per person when it comes to imports, at $94.94 (€80) per capita. In Amsterdam, that figure was $220.44; $419.08 in Bern; $159.51 in Paris; and $57.98 in Prague.
Most cities in the top 10 are in Europe, making the continent the most coffee-obsessed in the world, according to BrewSmartly. Just two of the top 10 are outside of Europe, with Pago Pago taking joint-eighth spot with Copenhagen, and Wellington in New Zealand rounding off the list at number 10.
While the population of American Samoa is around 55,000, Pago Pago has the most coffee shops per 100,000, at 246.
Within the top 100, London sits at joint-19th with Tokyo, but both cities’ coffee received higher rankings than Dublin when it came to quality, at 4.25 and 4.26 out of 5 respectively. In comparison to Dublin’s 181 coffee shops per 100,000 though, the UK capital has only 12, and the Japanese capital just 11.
Just one US city featured in the top 40 – Washington DC, ahead of London and Tokyo, at 18. The US capital has 138 coffee shop per 100,000, serving coffee with an average rating of 4.02.
The highest rating when it came to quality of coffee in the top 40 went to George Town in the Caymen Islands, at 4.41 out of 5; however, this city, with a population of only 40,000 has just seven coffee shops per 100,000 people.
