A landmark cottage at the end of Salthill Promenade in Galway city, idle for many years, is to be restored. Blackrock Cottage, beside Blackrock diving boards and bathing area in Salthill, is to be rebuilt as a two-bed cottage with adjoining shop.
The cottage is located on the beach side of Salthill Promenade and beside Galway Golf Club. It is in an area with a protected view and prospect.
Going against a recommendation from its inspector, An Bord Pleanála ruled that Mary Flynn can develop the derelict cottage. Flynn has got the all clear to build a two-storey extension involving the addition of an extra floor within the roof space of the cottage. The cottage will be remodelled to incorporate a kitchen/dining area, livingroom, two bedrooms, a bathroom and a shop.
The new cottage will comprise 121sq m (1,302sq ft), 10sq m (107sq ft) of which will be for retail use. The redevelopment of the prime seaside site had been opposed by An Taisce and a residents' association from the Ocean Towers apartment scheme, located across the road from the cottage.
