The K Club property bought by Kilkenny hurling legend DJ Carey and his former partner, entrepreneur Sarah Newman, for about €3 million in 2005 has gone on the market for €650,000. The four-bedroom, five-bathroom home at 908 Lady Castle is one of two properties the couple purchased on the grounds of the exclusive Kildare club, along with another property in Mount Juliet in Kilkenny, that were at the centre of a €9million judgment awarded to AIB against Newman and Carey in 2011.
While it’s a knockdown price for a luxury property with a balcony overlooking the 18th green where the Ryder Cup was played in 2006, potential buyers will need to factor in a couple of additional costs. Not least a “compulsory” country club membership to the K Club providing access to the two golf courses, and all the facilities of the club, including the spa, tennis courts and fishing rights on the river Liffey. These come with an annual charge of €6,430 for men and €3,215 for women. According to Hunters selling agent Jamie Douglas, this precondition has always been written into the title deeds on properties at the K Club.
The 346 sq m (3,724sq ft) house has been vacant for some time and could do with sprucing up, but it’s evident no expense was spared on the fit out from underfloor heating, to Chinese granite finishes, black hardwood floors and a fully integrated home entertainment system. An annual management fee of €2,346 also applies.
Last year, 938 Lady Castle, a three-bed originally purchased for about €2 million, sold for €470,000.
