Vincent O’Brien’s guns to be auctioned in Gleneagles

Monday (August 28th): Gavin Gardiner Ltd, auctioneers of fine modern and vintage sporting guns, rifles and accessories, auction of Modern & Vintage Sporting Guns at the Gleneagles Hotel, Auchterarder, Perthshire, Scotland, at 5pm. A pair of 12-bore "The Premier Quality" sidelock-ejector guns by EJ Churchill that were built in 1928 and are estimated at £8,000-£12,000 (€8.8k-€13k). The guns were subsequently owned by the prominent Irish racehorse trainer, the late Vincent O'Brien, whose initials the case bears [see pics]. Other highlights include a fine pair of 12-bore sidelock-ejector guns built in 1931 by James Purdey & Sons, £30,000 to £40,000 (€33k-€43.8k); and, a 12-bore self-opening sidelock-ejector gun by J Purdey & Sons, which was built in 1901 as the number two of a pair for W H Watney, son of the famous brewing family, who was later a lieutenant in the British army and died in the first World War in 1915, £3,000-£5,000 (€3.3k-€5.5k).

Lot 123, a diamond solitaire ring with an old European cut diamond of approx. 5.85ct, L-M, VVS1, mounted in 18ct white gold, €40,000-€45,000; Lot 169: a diamond solitaire pendant and chain with report stating diamond to be 3.11ct G VS2, mounted in platinum, in a fitted presentation case, €38,000-€40,000; Lot 200 a three-stone diamond ring, with three certs stating the diamonds to be 2.04ct H VS1, 1.08ct H SI1 and 1.08ct H VS1, 4.20ct in total, mounted in platinum, €25,000-€26,000; Lot 119: a diamond bracelet, set throughout with round brilliant cut and baguette cut diamonds of approx. 18.50cts in total, mounted in platinum, €20,000-€25,000; Lot 228, a ruby, sapphire and diamond "Butterfly" brooch, with ruby of approx. 0.30ct, sapphires of approx. 3ct in total, diamonds of approx. 0.90ct in total, €1,400-€1,500 [see pic]; and, Lot 229, a ruby and diamond "Flamingo" brooch, with rubies of approx. 0.70ct in total, diamonds of approx. 0.72ct in total, €1,300-€1,500 [see pic].
