Greystones living: grace and green space in Greystones for €950,000

This Co Wicklow coastal town nestled by the sea, within commuting distance of the capital, remains hugely popular. This week three houses – an Edwardian and two Victorians – have come on the market in the Burnaby area

An Edwardian house on the corner of Quarry Road in the quiet enclave called The Burnaby in Greystones, Co Wicklow, has been extensively refurbished by its current owners, who have lived here for 10 years.

It still has plenty of period details but Lisbuoy is now a five-bedroom family home in great condition decorated in muted creamy shades. It has a large back garden that includes a wooden play area with a tree-house – and planning permission to extend.

The 193sq m (2,080sq ft) house, built in 1902, has had several distinguished tenants over the years, including Eamon de Valera and writer Jennifer Johnston, according to the owners. It is for sale for €950,000 by private treaty through Sherry FitzGerald.

A verandah with its original tiles opens into a bright front hall: on the right, the drawingroom has built-in bookcases, a period fireplace and is decorated with striking red wallpaper. On the left of the hall is a large diningroom with a polished wood floor and a deep bay window. It opens down a few stairs into the creamy kitchen/breakfastroom with original ornate floor tiles; it has a Belfast sink, Britannia range and polished granite counter-tops; a utility room off it opens into the back garden. A study with a wood-burning stove also opens through double doors onto a small outside deck.

The hall, stairs and landing are attractively decorated in beige-and-white carpet and wallpaper. There are stained glass roof lights over the return and the upstairs landings, making both bright spaces. The main bedroom upstairs has a bay window looking towards the sea at the front of the house. It has a wall of wardrobes and an en suite shower room with clever towel storage space beside the shower. All but one of the other four bedrooms are doubles.

Outside, a curved fence divides the back and side gardens. The side garden is laid out in lawn with shrubs and rose bushes; the back lawn leads down to a rear entrance. There is plenty of room for parking in the gravelled front garden.
