DCU apartments approvedl Dublin City University (DCU) is getting into the property development game having just secured planning permission for an apartment scheme overlooking the university's sports grounds in Dublin 11.

Dublin City Council has given approval for the scheme on a 5.85 acre site on vacant site between 70 St Canice's Road and Scoil Chiarain.

The scheme will comprise 29 apartments in two blocks ranging in height from three to four stories. All units will have balconies or terraces overlooking an internal courtyard or the sports ground.

In granting permission the council has ruled that DCU must submit an ecological report addressing the issue of the potential use of the site by migratory birds during the winter months.

Letterkenny plan rejected  l A large residential scheme in Letterkenny, incorporating a pedestrian bridge over the River Swilly, has been refused by the planning board.

Carn Developments was looking to build 211 residential units on a 32.47 acre site south of the river. Letterkenny Town Council had granted permission for the scheme on a number of conditions. This decision was appealed to the planning board by four appellants including Cllr Dessie Clarke.

The planning board refused permission because the water supply and foul sewerage system in the area are not adequate and the scheme would provide an inadequate quality and quantity of public open space.

Stardust memorial refusal standsl Dublin Council's refusal of permission for a memorial commissioned to commemorate the victims of the Stardust tragedy is set to stand following a failed bid to appeal the decision.

Dublin City Council refused permission to Patrick Butterly and Sons Ltd to erect a four-metre bronze memorial at the Butterly Business Park in Artane, Dublin 5, the former site of the Stardust nightclub which burned down in the early hours of Valentine's Day 1981, killing 48 people.

The memorial with circular seating was refused by Dublin City Council, largely on the grounds that it was opposed by the families of the victims. This decision was appealed to An Bord Pleanála by the Butterlys, however the application was declared invalid and time has now run out to appeal the council's decision.
