The new Mercedes-Benz E-Class incorporates 2,000 new or further developed engineering and electronic features, all of which are designed to further improve the dynamics and safety of this trend-setting saloon and estate model range. Six new or enhanced engines maintain previous levels of fuel economy, with up to 26 per cent more power output and 18 per cent more torque.
The revamped front-end design is highlighted by the harmonisation of the bumper and the traditional Mercedes-Benz grille in a pronounced V-shape. The twin-headlamps now feature transparent louvres on the top section which produce a striking lighting effect when switched on.
It's all rather more subtle than radical, characterised by that strong Mercedes-Benz statement of traditional automotive excellence and topped off by the famous Three Pointed Star on the long bonnet. There is a new four-spoke steering wheel with elliptical thumb-operated buttons and a new control unit for the standard-fit Thermatic automatic climate control.
So much for the cosmetics, it is in the all important realm of safety that the E-Class sets a new benchmark. All models are equipped as standard with the anticipatory Pre-Safe system which activates seatbelt and airbag protection measures for the driver and front passenger prior to an impending collision.
The standard-fit Neck-Pro head restraints provide protection for the heads of the driver and front passenger by moving forwards within milli-sesconds in the event of a rear impact, thereby reducing the risk of whiplash injuries. The flashing brake lights fitted are a more effective advance warning than conventional brake lights in the prevention of collisions.
The new generation E-class is the first to feature adaptive headlamps, which respond to the prevailing driving and weather conditions. For the first time, white LEDs are used as parking lights. The Intelligent Light System is based on the powerful bi-xenon headlamps and includes five different lighting functions.
The newly developed suspension increases ride comfort and overall stability. Elegance and Avantgard models come with rebound buffer springs to limit body roll in cornering. The overall dimensions are as before but under the bonnet much is new. Six of the ten engines are new.
For the Irish market, eight models of the new generation E-Class are now on sale, with a line up of five petrol and three diesel engine options. Transmission ranges from six-speed manual to five and seven-speed automatic, according to model type.
