22: Hyundai i30 – scores big for quality, comfort and warranty

Top 100 cars for 2019: star is the N version, developed by ex-BMW dynamics star Albert Biermann

Basically the same underneath as a Kia Ceed, the i30 scores big with its quality, its comfort, and its helpful five-year, unlimited mileage warranty. While the standard five-door hatch is a trifle dull at which to look, and not an awful lot more exciting than that to drive (thanks to not having the Ceed’s sophisticated rear suspension), the i30 makes up for that with its cool Fastback model.

This manages to look lower and sleeker than the hatchback, has a more practical boot, and thanks to ever so slightly more sporting suspension settings, is better to drive than the standard car too. Estate version is usefully capacious, but the star of the i30 show is the N version, developed by ex-BMW dynamics überstar Albert Biermann. In 250hp or 275hp forms its fast, noisy, poised, and fun. While it doesn't quite manage to topple the benchmark Golf GTI, it's far closer a contest than you might have expected…
