41: Dacia Duster – honest workhorse delivering more than just good value

Top cars for 2018: On the eve of an update, the outgoing Duster is still a very tempting proposition

The new Duster’s arrives in early 2018, but the current model is still appealing enough to stand fairly high up this list, and not all of that is down to its price tag, still as much as €10,000 lower than some of its competition.

The thing about the Duster is that it’s just an appealingly honest workhorse. It uses a solid 1.5 dCi diesel engine (which should, at last, be augmented by a 1.2 petrol turbo engine next year), has ample space for cargo and people, and while it’s a long (long, long) way from dynamic perfection, it does lope along in a pleasant enough fashion.

The only serious demerits come on the inside, where the dashboard is made from recycled tupperware and the seats (lifted from a 1990s Clio) are an equal distance from proper comfort and supportiveness. Also, the optional touchscreen is set far too low down to be of any use once you are on the move. Still, with that price tag, it really would be churlish to quibble.

Best model: 1.5 dCi Signature
