Range Rover Sport: a fun drive that you will want to hold on to

There is a simple test of the Range Rover Sport’s appeal. Recently, when we had one on test for a week, it was returned (as is normal) and a less ritzy test car took its place on the family driveway. Upon hearing of this, our youngest offspring burst into inconsolable tears and demanded that we get the Range Rover back. Kids these days …

It’s not hard to see why he was so upset – the RR Sport has the big, bluff and handsome thing down pat, and to take a long drive in it on a wintry night is to truly understand the depth of its appeal. While all outside is snowy and blustery, inside you feel as if you are in an executive jet, gliding high above the worries of the world.

It's not perfect. That interior looks and feels rather less impressive than what you get in an Audi Q7 and it currently lacks a plug-in hybrid model, although a more frugal 2.0-litre twin-turbo diesel model will go on sale early next year. Land Rover still has a little work to do on convincing us of its long-term reliability prospects too. But it's not hard to see where the tears came from.
