For all those who thought that turbo-charging and downsizing of petrol engines would somehow emasculate the sportier cars of the world, we present the Ferrari 488 GTE. Now, it must be said that it is true that the 3.8-litre turbo does lack, ever so slightly the final nth degree of ferocious thrash that the old 458 had from its naturally aspirated engine, but in all other respects this turbo V8 is the superior species.

Turbocharging has lifted power to a whopping 670hp, a figure which not so long ago would have been higher than that of any other production car, yet the clever electronics make it docile and easy to drive at low speeds. You won’t want to drive it at low speeds though. You’ll want to use the flappy-paddle gearbox (its paddles set behind a steering wheel rather overloaded too many buttons and functions) to haul it up to maximum rpm time and time again.

Sorry, officer, just checking to make totally sure the sounds is different…
