Road-testing the new Ducati ST4s: Ducati is best known for cutting-edge sports machines, but its ST (Sport Tourismo) range caters for those who want sporty performance with everyday utility and touring capability. The 2004 ST4s is virtually a new model which aims to improve comfort and performance.

It's powered by the tried and tested 996cc Desmoquattro power plant. Desdromic valves, unique to Ducati, are both opened and closed by camshaft action; they don't rely on springs for closure. Desmoquattro means "four Desdromic valves".

The revised front fairing is taller and incorporates a double curved headlight with electrically controlled height adjustment, and a comprehensive electronic instrument panel. Rider and passenger ergonomics have been significantly improved with 20 mm height adjustable handlebars and 4-position adjustable clutch and brake levers. The new seat is designed to be more comfortable for longer journeys and it stops the passenger from sliding forward during braking.

The height adjustable exhaust allows for adding panniers or saddlebags. Raise the system for track days or more ground clearance; lower it for touring.

An anti-theft immobiliser is standard. Front suspension is adjustable Showa USD forks with low friction coatings. The Ohlins rear shock absorber is fully adjustable and has a remote pre-load adjustment. The swinging arm is aluminium. Brakes use Brembo Serie Oro callipers - front disks are 320mm semi-floating, rear is a single 245mm disk. ABS is available as an option.

The ST4s 996 engine has been tuned for smooth and linear power delivery. It's liquid cooled, twin cylinder, 4-valves per cylinder and produces 117 hp @ 8,750 rpm and 10 kgm of torque at 7,000 rpm. Electronic injection, computerised engine management and advanced CAN electronics ensure reliability coupled with smooth, powerful performance. Claimed top speed is 160 mph.

The ST4s looks distinctly more "sports" than "tourer" but unlike many "sports tourers" it's comfortable enough for rider and passenger to enjoy long trips as well as being capable of tackling twisty roads and Alpine passes. Its sporty nature is shown in manoeuvrability which is impressive given a 212 kg weight.

We felt that the riding position with the standard bars (taller ones are available) was a trifle too "sports" for serious touring. The seat was comfortable for rider and passenger and the generous fairing gave good protection. The screen, not adjustable, was effective. Mirrors were well placed, but they could be larger.

The dry clutch is, understandably, on the noisy side. Gear changes were precise and throttle response good although vibration is felt through the bars and tank. Power delivery is smooth through all gears, but top is strictly an open road gear.

For those who need a good all-round sporting tourer, without the daunting bulk and cost of, say, a Honda Gold Wing or BMW K 1200 LT, this Ducati is a serious contender.

Its ability to tackle everything from the daily commute, weekend trip, track day or long distance touring in a distinctly sporty manner are all part of its appeal. And the price is significantly less than many serious tourers.
