In line with a strategy to create a common look across the range, Seat has launched the latest generation of its Toledo family car. Wearing what Seat hopes will become its trademark big front grille, it bears a striking resemblance to the recently launched Altea. Michael McAleer reports
The only distinctive difference, apart from interior space and price, appears to be a new notchback styling on the boot, reminiscent of Renault's Vel Satis.
At 4.50 metres long, 1.57 metres tall and 1.77 metres wide, the new Toledo is slightly larger in virtually all measurements to the Altea, but its biggest selling point will be the two-level 500-litre luggage compartment.
Four engines are on offer: two petrol (150 bhp 2.0 FSI and 102 bhp 1.6) and two diesel (140 bhp 2.0 TDI and 105 bhp 1.9 TDi). The two most powerful engines - the 2-litre FSI and TDI - come with a six-speed manual gearbox. In addition, the FSI will be available with automatic and sequential Tiptronic 6-speed gearbox. The 2.0 TDI will have the option of the new DSG 6-speed gearbox.
Two trim levels are available. The entry level R specification features 16" wheels with low-profile tyres, remote controlled central locking, CD radio with 6 speakers and folding (60/40) rear seats. The S adds dual-zone climate control, seven-spoke alloy wheels, leather steering wheel, radio controls on steering wheel and cruise control. A Sport option for both levels offers 16" alloys, sports suspension and sports seats.
Prices start at € 22,800 for the 1.6 R petrol and € 25,370 for the 1.9 TDi. The 2.0 FSI fitted with a six-speed Tiptronic transmission is € 31,270 and the 2.0 TDi with six-speed DSG gearbox is € 32,920.
Standard features include ABS and traction control (TCS) along with six airbags. It also includes three-point seatbelts for all five seats, with pyrotechnic pre-tensioners at the front and the Isofix system for securing child seats integrated in the back seats.
Recognising the similarity between the two latest Seats, the company claims the new Toledo will earn the same five-star occupant protection result in the EuroNCAP tests as the Altea "given that its structure and safety features are identical".
