Everything is bigger in America, even the nutty stuff. At the Madonna Inn and Spa Resort, in San Luis Obispo, California, you could stay for 110 nights and never stay in the same planet twice, let alone the same room. Each one is weirder than the last.
Where to start? Well, the Buffalo Room has a giant head on grassy green wallpaper looking mournfully over activities in the four-poster bed below, which is made of rough hewn branches.
The Cabin Still has a stone-flagged floor, copper vats and a moonshine still in the loo, while the Caveman has walls made of solid rock, with animal prints and a rock pond. A waterfall spills from overhead in the stone shower and water flows from the rocks into a stone sink. There’s even stone-age clubs to add to the, eh, fun.
The Chestnut Foal room has a small horse suspended over the bed, while the room entitled Cloud Nine has a golden angel in a similar setting.
There’s a Gypsy room with a ceiling “designed to look like a colourful scarf”, and a Love Nest, accessed across a trestle bridge, featuring a spiral staircase to its own viewing tower.
There is also a room called Tall and Short, with furniture designed for odd-sized partners – where even the bed is higher on one side than the other.
You can’t miss the Irish room, entitled Irish Hills. If features all 40 shades of green, with golden cushions and a real live leprechaun to bring you good luck. No of course it’s not real, it’s actually a gnome.
