ICE DOME:FANS OF such sports as ice hockey and figure-skating are being encouraged to make the short trip to Dundalk Ice Dome in coming months.
The dome, which is home to an Olympic-sized ice rink, is hosting a number of events this season aimed at beginners, experienced skaters and families.
Located in Dundalk Retail Park, not far outside the town, the dome attracts about 5,000 visitors each week. People travel from around the country to visit the Co Louth venue in order to learn how to skate and play ice hockey or simply to attend one of the dome's social events. The rink is also open for 90-minute public skating sessions throughout the week.
The dome is home to the Dundalk Bulls ice-hockey team, who won this year's Irish league and are planning to enter a Celtic League in September. It also hosts the Irish international ice-hockey team and serves as the second ground for the Belfast Giants. The Dundalk Bulls' under-age teams start at under-10 level, and their women's side plays in the men's B league.
Enthusiasts inspired to take to the ice can sign up to the dome's ice-hockey lessons, which cater for all age groups. In addition, professional coaches will run a power-skating and skills hockey camp for children in June and July.
Figure-skating lessons with former American Olympians take place every six weeks, and shorter summer figure-skating camps will start in July.
The venue is a popular choice for children's parties, and the dome also hosts a disco on ice every Friday and Saturday night, with food and drink available at the bar between dances.
