That this Downstream satchel from Utah-based outdoorsy brand Chums has a rolltop opening signals its waterproofing intent, as this is sort of closure is usually confined to larger, technical backpacks and duffles.

Made from double-coated nylon with a YKK water-resistant zip on the front pocket, RF-welded seams keep the main pocket watertight. It can be worn over the shoulder or around the waist if that’s a look you can carry off. It’s a compact 15cm x 25cm.

It’s based on its own beach towel design which combines a waterproof nylon backing with a cotton terry layer – meaning sand doesn’t stick to it (though the drying functionality is likely to be a little compromised).

The same thinking applies here – sand doesn't stay – and so you don't haul your own private beach back to the car when you're going. It's 100 per cent machine washable and includes internal mesh bag with zip for the bag's beans (not included). Just the thing for the not-so-wild Atlantic Way.

AquaVault FlexSafe: portable outdoor safe that you can strap on to just about any sort of bar

AquaVault FlexSafe

The FlexSafe appeared on a US TV Dragons' Den equivalent, called Shark Tank apparently, where one of the "Sharks" backed the idea. It's a portable outdoor safe, which you can strap on to just about any sort of bar, with a combination lock to keep it securely closed.

The FlexSafe’s material is slash and water resistant, with an internal zippered pocket to repel even the most digitally dexterous thief. And the lightweight design means it can fold up small for packing. Just make sure whatever you’re attaching it to isn’t too easily removed by more street-savvy shark-types.
