Would you want to spend the night in a draughty and prominent spot on the wall of a fortification? Does sleeping in the middle of a former border control appeal?
Let us put this another way: the Great Wall of China not only figures on some lists of wonders of the medieval world but is also a leading tourist attraction. And you could sleep on it. In the ever escalating bid to trump the latest novel travel experience, you too can spend a night on the Great Wall of China, in what looks from the photos on its Airbnb listing like one of its watchtowers.

The website has come up with a wheeze for another of its one-off stays and is offering a room on the Great Wall, with a competition for four prizes of a one-night for two people between September 4th-17th in “a custom-designed home situated on the ancient Great Wall”.
With what is described as “an open roof” (ie no roof) and 360-degree views of the wall, the “bedroom” has a portable toilet or visitors can trek to a visitors’ centre, according to Conde Naste Traveler, which first reported the contest.

There are some luxury add-ons for the winner: a “multi-course gourmet dinner” and a private traditional concert in the tower bedroom at sunset. In the morning you can take a hike along with wall to see the sunrise at the highest watchtower, followed by some calligraphy or making a stamp.
