Sunday Independent editor Alan English has stepped down from his role citing personal reasons, staff at the newspaper have been told.

It is understood Mr English handed in his notice last week, and intends to edit his last edition at the end of April. Staff in the wider Mediahuis umbrella will be informed later today.

Mr English, who has edited the Sunday Independent since 2020, is understood to have told staff that it was his own decision to go and was for personal reasons.

The resignation has come as a surprise to staff in the newspaper.
