Johannesburg - South African police yesterday said two senior officials of the country's ruling party had been shot dead, fuelling fears of a further upsurge in political violence ahead of South Africa's 1999 elections.

A police spokesman said an ANC MP, Bheki Mthembu, and a party official Skhondla Mthethwa were killed as they left a meeting late on Wednesday. A youth was also killed.
