Ankara - A 10-month hunger strike over controversial prison reforms in Turkey claimed another victim yesterday, bringing to 30 the overall death toll from the protest, the Anatolia news agency reported. Mr Muharrem Horoz (28) died at a state hospital in Izmit to which he had been admitted 10 days ago. He was on the 236th day of his hunger strike when he died.

Hundreds of mainly leftwing inmates launched the hunger strike against the introduction of new jails with tighter security and small cells, where they feared they would be more vulnerable to mistreatment.
