SIPTU has called for personal tax allowances to be increased by £900 in order to boost the earnings of low-paid workers. SIPTU vice-president Mr Des Geraghty said that targeting cuts at the top rate of tax would be an optical illusion that would do nothing for the low-paid.

"I don't trust the combination of Mary Harney and Charlie McCreevy to carry out fundamental tax reform," he said.
