Abbey National ended a three-month search for a new chief executive today, bolstering its case to fight off takeover interest from Bank of Ireland.

British-born Mr Luqman Arnold, former president of Swiss banking group UBS, will be paid a basic salary of £675,000 sterling (€1.07 million) a year to revive Abbey's fortunes.
