Washington - The US Attorney General-designate, Mr John Ashcroft, promised yesterday that if confirmed by the Senate he would enforce all the nation's laws, even ones he disagrees with, like the Supreme Court's 1973 decision that legalised abortion.
While almost all committee Republicans seemed to accept Mr Ashcroft at his word, several Democrats openly challenged his conservative record which has made him a long-time hero to the religious right.
