Algiers - A terrorist bomb killed 10 people in Algiers yesterday just hours before thousands took to the streets to protest over the recent murder of the singer Lounes Matoub and a new law enforcing Arabic as the country's sole official language.
A further 21 were injured by the bomb, five of them seriously, which exploded at Ouad Kniss, a market frequented by second-hand dealers and informal vendors in an eastern suburb of Algiers. This was the first such attack in the capital in several weeks. It came as security service officials announced that government forces had killed the leader of the Algiers section of the Armed Islamic Group (GIA), along with 10 of his lieutenants
