Around €20,000 was stolen in an armed raid on a bank in Co Carlow this morning.

Three raiders - one armed with a shotgun - broke into the AIB branch in Tullow at around 9.20 a.m.

The three gained entry through a back door of the bank, locked the staff into a room and took a number of sacks containing cash.

No shots were fired and no one was injured during the raid, but several staff members were said to be traumatised by the experience.

The raiders escaped in a black or navy blue Volkswagon Golf car in the direction of Ardattin.
