A man who worked for almost 27 years in the insulation and lagging business died of a rare cancer associated with exposure to asbestos, an inquest at Dublin City Coroner's Court heard yesterday.

Mr David Moloney (63) of 52 Shangan Gardens, Ballymun, died at the Mater Hospital on 9th May, 1999. Some months previously he had been diagnosed with mesothelioma of the abdomen - a rare form of cancer.

No post-mortem examination was carried out at the time of his death. However, due to the reference in the certificate to asbestos the registrar of deaths sought an inquest. The jury returned a verdict of death due to an occupational disease with exposure to asbestos as a factor.
