Cricket:Tim Paine missed his maiden test century but Australia reached a competitive 428 all out in in the first test against India on Saturday.
Paine, who was dropped by India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni off Zaheer Khan before he could open his account on Friday, went on to score 92 before the Indian pacer finally removed him after a 196-ball knock featuring 12 boundaries.
Other overnight batsman Shane Watson had fallen in the morning session after a well-compiled 126.
Resuming on the overnight score of 224-5, both Watson and Paine played with great caution, negating the threat posed by Zaheer's reverse swing.
Having featured in a 141-run stand with skipper Ricky Ponting on Friday, Watson was eventually removed by Harbhajan Singh after a marathon 338-ball knock that included 10 boundaries.
Paine, however, found good support down the order from Mitchell Johnson (47) and the duo added 82 runs for the seventh wicket.
Zaheer removed Johnson and went on to complete his five-wicket haul.
