London - The author Lady Naomi Mitchison has died at the age of 101, her family said last night. Lady Mitchison had been described as the "doyenne" of Scottish literature.

Born in Edinburgh in 1897, her first novel was published in 1923. She campaigned for women's rights long before that was either welcome or understood, and argued for socialism and radical feminism.
