Baby death toll may be higher

Bristol - The death toll from the Bristol Royal Infirmary heart babies scandal may be three times larger than previously thought, medical experts said last night. They believe that the number of babies who died or who received brain damage from complex surgery is likely to be closer to 90 rather than the 29 recorded cases. In 1998, medical director James Wisheart and former hospital chief executive John Roylance were struck off the medical register by the General Medical Council. The case led to a public inquiry into the deaths at the hospital between 1983 and 1995.
