Two men charged with the attempted robbery on Monday of former Dublin footballer and well known publican Mr Paddy Cullen have been remanded in custody with consent to bail by Swords District Court.
Mr John McCann (18), Virginia Drive, Finglas, and Mr Darren Maher (18), with an address at Rathvilley Drive, Finglas, appeared before Judge Cormac Dunne. Garda Darren Martin said that when the charges were put to both men at Swords Garda station they did not reply.
Garda Martin said he was objecting to bail because he believed there was a risk both of the accused would flee. He added that there was considerable evidence against the men and that they had been "caught red-handed".
The court was also told that Mr McCann had failed to turn up at a hearing before the juvenile court in April 2003 and that a bench warrant had been issued for his arrest in relation to this.
Mr Aidan McCarthy BL, representing both of the accused, said Mr McCann had been involved in a serious motorbike accident and at the time he was due to appear in court he was incapacitated.
Mr McCarthy said Mr McCann was on disability allowance of €134.80 per week and lived at home. Mr Maher lived with his grandmother.
Judge Dunne granted bail on condition that the accused sign on at Finglas Garda station twice daily until they appear before Swords District Court next Tuesday. Both men were also ordered to adhere to a curfew between 10 p.m. and 8 a.m.
Both of the accused were granted bail on their own bond of €500 and a €2,000 independent cash surety.
