A man charged with having explosives in a car at Dun Laoghaire ferryport earlier this month was refused bail by the High Court yesterday. Mr Larry Keane (41), Cloney, Athy, Co Kildare, had previously been refused bail by the Special Criminal Court. His application was renewed in the High Court before Mrs Justice McGuinness.

Gardai opposed the application. Insp Eamonn O'Reilly said Mr Keane had been charged before the Special Criminal Court with two breaches of the Explosive Substances Act, related to an allegation that he had 980 lb of explosives at Dun Laoghaire and was about to board a ferry.
