It proved a symbol of oppression for many during its former use, however, visitors to Lismore Castle will now be able to appreciate the Berlin Wall in a different light.
An impulse acquisition during a trip to the German capital last year, Lord Bill Burlington thought two slabs from the historic structure would serve a better purpose when installed in the grounds of his Waterford residence.
The 2.5 tonne concrete segments were lifted over the 17th-century estate walls earlier this week, and will reside in the castle gardens for the perusal of the general public.
Speaking following their arrival, Lord Burlington said he felt “extremely fortunate to have acquired such a powerful reminder of one of the most significant episodes of European history of recent years”.
Segments of the wall have made their way to a variety of international locations including Los Angeles, Sydney and the Vatican since it fell in 1989.
It had stood for 28 years, during which time its function was to separate residents of west Berlin from their communist-governed eastern counterparts.
Located in a small rural town, the scenic surrounds of Lismore Castle also play host to a variety of contemporary exhibitions featuring works from both domestic and international artists.
