London - A smart car is being developed which compensates for the stupidity of bad drivers, it was reported yesterday. By learning a driver's behaviour, the vehicle can predict when he or she is about to do something dangerous and take emergency action to avoid disaster.

The system, developed by engineers at Japanese car makers Nissan and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, uses a computer and sensors on the steering wheel, accelerator and brake to monitor driving patterns.
