Thurles came to a standstill last night as hundreds of mourners gathered to pay their final respects to the victims of Monday night's double killing in the Co Tipperary town.

The hearses bearing the bodies of Bill and Theresa Doherty, from Monadreen, were preceded by a Garda escort and former colleagues of the ex-garda formed a guard-of-honour beside his hearse. Pupils of the Ursuline Convent, where Mrs Doherty worked as a study supervisor, flanked the hearse bearing her remains.

The couple will be buried this morning after Requiem Mass in the Cathedral of the Assumption.
