There was speculation last night that the Church of Ireland Bishop of Derry and Raphoe, Right Rev Ken Good, will move to Connor as the church's 11 bishops meet in Dublin today to elect a bishop for their largest diocese.
Connor diocese covers most of Co Antrim, including a large part of Belfast.
A decision on this appointment passed to the House of Bishops last month due to the failure of an Episcopal Electoral College to elect a new bishop for Connor diocese at its meeting in Armagh on March 28th.
The vacancy in Connor has arisen because of the elevation of its former bishop, Most Rev Alan Harper, to Armagh.
On March 15th he was enthroned as Church of Ireland Primate of All-Ireland and Archbishop of Armagh at St Patrick's Cathedral, in a ceremony where readings were by President Mary McAleese and the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip.
At the March meeting of the electoral college, presided over by Archbishop Harper, the 60 members included three members of the House of Bishops, 12 elected clergy and 12 elected lay people from the diocese of Connor, as well as elected clergy and lay people from each of the other six dioceses of the church's northern province.
However, no name received the required two-thirds of votes among both clerical and lay members of the electoral college, thus passing the decision on to today's meeting of the House of Bishops.
