British Prime Minister Tony Blair today urged fellow EU leaders not to yield an inch in future confrontations with anti-capitalist anarchists who disrupted their Gothenburg summit.
In an uncompromising message to the protesters, Mr Blair said they were an anarchists' travelling circus going from summit to summit causing mindless mayhem.
"It is important we don't concede an inch to these people," Mr Blair told a news conference on the summit's last day.
In two prevous days of riots, including when US President George W. Bush was present, the centre of Sweden's second city of Gothenburg resembled a battle zone with hundreds detained, dozens injured and widespread damage.
Mr Blair said goverments had to fight the anarchists and their message with every means at their disposal.
Like other EU leaders, he warned the group was likely to also try to disrupt next month's G-8 meeting in Italy.
Making his first appearance with EU leaders since he won a landslide re-election victory earlier in June, Mr Blair said he had come under no pressure at the summit for Britain to make a speedy decision on joining the euro currency.
